Potential reduction in life expectancy (long-term exposure)
no reduction
With sustained exposure PM2.5 Calculating Life Years Lost Per Person. The AQLI estimates the relationship between air pollution and life expectancy, allowing users to view the gain in life expectancy they could experience if their community met World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines, national standards or some other standard.

The Air Quality Index (AQI) is used for reporting daily air quality. It tells you how clean or polluted your air is, and what associated health effects might be a concern for you. The AQI focuses on health effects you may experience within a few hours or days after breathing polluted air. EPA calculates the AQI for five major air pollutants regulated by the Clean Air Act: ground-level ozone, particle pollution (also known as particulate matter), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen dioxide. For each of these pollutants, EPA has established national air quality standards to protect public health.
Statistics AQI
PM2.5
1 µg/m3
WHO guideline (daily): 15 µg/m³ PM2.5 are air pollutants with a diameter of 2.5 micrometers. Particulate matter (PM) is a common proxy indicator for air pollution. There is strong evidence for the negative health impacts associated with exposure to this pollutant. The major components of PM are sulfates, nitrates, ammonia, sodium chloride, black carbon, mineral dust and water.
PM1
1 µg/m3
Unlike PM2.5, PM1 is not regulated, and monitoring technology for PM1 is limited. Research is still being conducted to better understand the specific harm that PM1 causes in contrast to other particulate pollutants like PM2.5 and ultrafine particles (UFPs).
PM10
1 µg/m3
WHO guideline (daily): 45 µg/m³ PM10 are air pollutants with a diameter of 10 micrometers (one thousandth of millimeter) or less. It can be caused by human activity: Particulate matter can originate from energy supply and industrial processes, metal and steel production as well as the reloading of bulk material or it can be of natural origin, for example as a result of soil erosion. In agglomerations road traffic is the dominant source.
